By Omar Torres: It’s finally happening, a mega fight in boxing between Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. This fight could have the chance to match the previous record set by Oscar De La Hoya vs. Mayweather in 2007, and this match can help boxing rise again, at least here in the U.S.
It’s too bad that we might never see Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao, but at least we get to see this very interesting fight. Mayweather is finally going to be taking on a powerful young fighter in the peek of his career. This would be the first time Floyd faces a strong young stud such as Canelo in years. Canelo has never faced an opponent with the supreme boxing skills such as Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Austin Trout being the closest.
This fight will be at 152 pounds for Mayweather’s WBA junior middleweight title and Alvarez’s WBA and WBC belts as well. I know people have a few questions in mind, like how is Alvarez going to beat Mayweather? Canelo is a warrior and willing to take shots to give shots. I expect Canelo to pressure Floyd and hit him with his powerful shots. I also expect Canelo to be more patient like he did in the Trout fight last April.
The Mayweather camp will most likely expect an aggressive Alvarez in the first few rounds. Another question in peoples minds is can Canelo handle Mayweather’s defensive skills? That’s something we will just have to see come fight night. Floyd has faced Miguel Cotto and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in his last two fights and in the Cotto fight everyone saw a much slower Mayweather getting hit by Cotto more than his been hit in a long time. In the Guerrero fight Mayweather impressed me with his ability to weave Robert and show his defensive supremacy and command the whole fight, but Floyd is still undeniably slower than before.
Saul is Much faster than both Cotto and Robert and he is not flat footed like Robert and also throws more combinations. I expect Canelo to land more shots to Mayweather than Guerrero did in his last fight. Can Mayweather handle Saul’s punching power? Saul Alvarez is considered to have one of the strongest punching powers in the 154 lb. division. Mayweather hasn’t felt a punch quite like Canelo’s in a while. If Canelo is able to pierce through Mayweather’s defense on September 14th, then Floyd will have a problem on his hands and is in for a world of hurt coming to him, as Canelo has knockout power and It’s no question Canelo has the ability to knockout Floyd cold especially since they are fighting at 152 with no rehydration rule. It gives Canelo an advantage, and if he can stop him, we might get a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Who will win the fight? This one is tough to call which is the beauty of it. We just have to sit back and watch boxing at it’s best making history.
